Baseball Field Makeover Inspires Entire Student Body at New San Juan High School

SACRAMENTO, Calif., March 11, 2010 - Volunteers organized by Sutter Health and the Sacramento River Cats will transform New San Juan High School’s varsity baseball field into a “field of dreams.”

For nearly a decade, Sutter Health and the Sacramento River Cats have joined together to meet community health needs. The annual “field of dreams” project provides much-needed facility improvements, promotes physical activity, enhances school pride and extends community health beyond the walls of medical offices and hospitals.

More than 200 volunteers will help give the field a complete overhaul including:

• Professional in-field makeover by River Cats Sports turf management
• Renovation of bullpen, batting cage and bleachers
• Gardening
• Painting (subject to weather conditions)
• Renovation of foul poles
• Installation of some outfield windscreen and yellow poly cap
• Installation of replacement water fountain in home dugout

Facts
Over the last 30 years, the number of overweight children ages 6 to 11 has increased 162 percent in the United States. The number of overweight teenager has increased 252 percent in the same time period according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Obesity has wide-ranging impacts on a child’s health and well-being – anything from depression and sleep disorders to diabetes and learning difficulties.
